story image

Description

The 2,219 ha project area in Târnava Mare, Transylvania, is a biodiverse landscape of pastures, meadows, woodlands, and arable land, historically managed using low-intensity, traditional farming techniques. This area, however, faces threats due to economic pressures forcing farmers to sell or intensify land use. Large agrifood companies are buying up land, increasing prices, and converting biodiverse grasslands into high-intensity agricultural land. EU Common Agricultural Policy payments are insufficient to support traditional farming, leading to a decrease in biodiversity-friendly practices. The project developer rePLANET are implementing the Wallacea methodology for biodiversity gains quantification and Biodiversity Futures Initiative is the validator and verifier.

Impact & Result

The project is set to issue a total of 421,471 awardable Biodiversity Credits over a 25-year period, with credits issued every two years. Six biome metrics have been selected for monitoring: higher plants (abundance and species richness), butterflies (abundance and species richness), breeding birds (abundance and species richness), arthropods excluding butterflies (biomass), soil fauna (biomass and species richness), and herpetofauna (abundance and species richness).

Solution Spotlight

Integrity Certificates infrastructure offers rapid third-party verification, reliable certificate issuance and flexible trading of natural assets. Applicable to diverse value chains ranging from nature restoration projects to green chemical processes, the solutions provides data integrity linked to environmental claims. By recoding actions and data on-chain in a public ledger, truth to support claims can easily be traced back to the source. A transparent repository of key information for each account and certificate is maintained on the same chain, enabling a single point of entry for auditors. Certificates can easily be traded in a decentralised environment or used for reporting.
